This is Shopped.
In fact, 90% of my freelance graphic design work involves photomanipulation. I love it. I love taking a handful (or sometimes, two dozen) pieces, and knitting them together to create a new image. I don’t always get everything right. I am terrible about lighting and perspective. But I try and be as thorough (read: anal retentive) as I can. Which means that there are reflections in the windows, and shadows where there ought to be shadows. I added a distortion on the interior, so it looks as if you’re viewing the inside of the shop through imperfect glass.
Each piece of this illustration is part of a story. The shop itself is from Will Shetterly and Emma Bull’s Bordertown Series stories, and Shetterly’s books Elsewhere and NeverNever. But I didn’t rely on author descriptions so much as my own instincts, and my ideas of what a bookshop would look like in B-town.
For example, the reflection in the glass is London. The signs and flyers on the windows come from some of my favourite second-hand bookshops in real life. I was heavily influenced by a local Chicago shop, Bookman’s Corner, which to me always looked like a piece of B-town in Chicago.

There is a cat because my absolute favourite shop, Rick’s Shake, Rattle & Read in Uptown, had a bookstore cat named Duchess.
There are untidy stacks of random books in the display windows because of a shop I always used to pass on Belmont that had a faded (and much-coveted on my part) ALA poster of Disney’s Gargoyles Goliath, encouraging kids to read.
There is a chalk sign because I imagine that Wolfboy (I cannot call him ‘Lobo’ because that name is ridiculously adorably stupid in that way teenaged boys try to be cooler than they really are, and it always felt like Pottsie wanting to call himself the Fonz, to me) does a brisk trade divesting n00bs of their Gaiman and Pratchett, DC and Marvel, cheap airport-bought thrillers and battered romance novels in exchange for four-leafed clovers and tickets to new bands at Danceland or the Ferret.
Cameras don’t work in B-town. Or, at least, they don’t work the way you’d hope or expect them to. So this is not a snapshot of a fictional bookshop. Except that it is. And I had a wonderful time putting it together.
It will go up on Bordertownseries.com as desktop wallpaper this evening, and prints will be available via DA and Cafepress. But nothing can beat that moment when I emailed a draft to Ellen Kushner, and she nearly wept with joy. That is what I strive for. That is what I desire.
And that is what I wanted to share, so you guys understand a bit about both my job, and how my brain works, and how stories feed my soul.

rerylikes:

I just received this email from change.org and I’d really like for everyone to pay attention for a second:

The cell phone video is grainy, but what it shows is simple enough: A 15-year-old boy being viciously beaten because he’s gay.

The incident took place last week at Unioto High School in Chillicothe, Ohio. In the video, there’s a skinny 15-year-old boy in a classroom full of students. A much bigger boy says something to him. The smaller boy tries to walk away, but the bigger boy punches him. First once. Then again. Then over and over while the smaller boy curls on the ground, writhing in pain.

“I covered myself, I shielded my body, and he just kept hitting me,” the victim said later. “Nobody did anything [to help me].”

Despite the brutal beating being caught on video, the bully received only three days’ suspension, which means he could be back to school as soon as this week. The Union-Scioto school district has an anti-bullying policy that protects for gender, race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, and disability — but not sexual orientation or gender identity.

Bret Thompson is from Ohio, too, and he was appalled when he read about the school district’s lax handling of such a serious incident. Bret started a petition on Change.org demanding that the Union-Scioto school district enact an anti-bullying policy that will protect LGBT students to prevent future beatings like this one. Click here to watch the cell phone video of the incident and sign Bret’s petition right now.

The victim’s mom, Rebecca Collins, says this wasn’t the first time her son was bullied for being gay. In fact, just two days before the beating, Rebecca’s son posted a picture of himself on Facebook, and the boy who later beat him up commented that the picture was “the definition of a fag.”

Perhaps most upsetting of all, the beating took place in a classroom during the few minutes between classes, when teachers are required to roam the halls to make sure kids aren’t getting into trouble.Clearly, the current anti-bullying policy in the Union-Scioto School District isn’t working.

Union-Scioto district officials want this incident handled quickly and quietly, but they need to know that Ohioans take the issue of anti-LGBT attacks extremely seriously. As Bret Thompson says, “If the school administrators won’t send a message to their student body that this is unacceptable, we’ll just have to send a message to them.”

Please sign Bret’s petition demanding that the Union-Scioto school district enact a policy to protect LGBT students from bullying:

Thanks for being a change-maker,

- Eden and the Change.org team

P.S. Anti-gay bullying is pervasive throughout North America. Here are some other actions you can take to help fight this important issue:

  1. After a gay teen took his life in Ottawa, Claudia Van den Heuvel started this petition to improve conditions at Ottawa-Carleton District Schools.
  2. Sean Chapin — who inspired the San Francisco Giants to make their “It Gets Better” video — is asking the 49ers to become the first team in the NFL to make a video to stand up to anti-gay bullying
  3. Elle’ Kelly was tired of being bullied at her middle school in Georgia, so she started a petition on Change.org asking her school to start a Gay Straight Alliance.
  4. Gloria Nieto wants her favorite hockey team, the San Jose Sharks, to be the first NHL team to send a strong message that bullying is wrong, and that “It Gets Better.”

First up on my queue for monster month: Gremlins! I choose them first because they start out small and sweet but before you know it they’re shootin old ladys outta windows and turning your own tractor against you… actually I think the most disturbing part about the movie was when Kate tells the story about how her dad died pretending to be Santa. Anywho, there’s some gremlins^ Happy OCTOBER!!!

Makes me laugh every time I look at it. Especially the look of horror in the first one!

I’M THE THUNDER GOD, THOR!

AWW YEAH IRON MAN!

Fuck I’ve done this twice and both times I’ve gotten Quicksilver. MY FATE IS SEALED.

Scarlet Witch. And I cheated and dragged it like three times. Every single time, I’m Wanda. Welp.
Hey Arielle, I guess this means we get to go be incesty now.

=:o oh mai

Captain America, eh? Well doesn’t that just go perfectly with my RECENTLY IMPROVED AMERIJACKET

if you’re wondering, the shield was hand-stitched out of scrap cloth (except for the silver iron-on star), as evidenced by its derpiness:

but wutevah wutevah, i’m still super happy. no one makes sheriff jokes at me anymore! 8D

1. Dakt, that jacket is fully stupendous.
and 2. Hawkeye all the way. Cuz I’m cool like that. (Although I will admit I was hoping for Spider-Man)

I think, for me, this is the crux of what Occupy Wall Street are about.
(Or I could refer you to Lemony Snicket’s Thirteen Observations made by Lemony Snicket while watching Occupy Wall Street from a Discreet Distance …)

Wow. Just wow.

Me, or an approximation thereof. Was gonna use this as part of a site but decided I didn’t particularly like it. So I’m posting it here!

Kitty Pryde (with straight hair?) and Lockheed (who looks like my cat?)

And (almost) Dr. Doom. (Inked by Curt Shoultz, who added some more…ahem, feminine aspects as a commentary on the fact that I don’t draw very manly men. Gotta work on that.)

Group of us who made a comic last spring got together at the local comic store to sell/sign copies of the comic (which we created as a fundraiser for our class’s upcoming trip to Toronto). We spent the day drawing, and I was forced to speed draw (cuz they were growing irritated by my slowness…they put me on a timer!). These are a couple of the fifteen minute sketches I did.
